• The Andean bear, also known as the spectacled bear, is a South American bear species native to the Andes Mountains. It is the only bear species native to South America and is the largest land carnivore in that part of the world.

Andean bears are omnivorous, and their diet consists mainly of plants, such as fruits, leaves, and shoots. They will also eat small mammals, insects, and carrion. Andean bears are solitary animals and are most active at night. They spend most of their time foraging for food and are excellent climbers.

Andean bears are classified as vulnerable by the IUCN Red List. Their main threats are habitat loss, hunting, and conflict with humans.

  • This piece is a study of one of the most fascinating Australian native bees. They have the most distinctive bright yellow markings on the face and across the shoulders and a dark metallic blue abdomen.  Another peculiarity of this species is the territorial behaviour of males in Banksia flowers.  It would be a hard task for males to find Banksia bee females, mainly because they nest such diverse locations. However, females visit Banksia flowers to gather pollen and nectar and that is where they can both meet for mating.  Open edition print. Signed and unnumbered. This piece is a study of one of the most beautiful Australian native bees. They have the most unmistakable bands of metallic blue fur across their black abdomens. Another peculiarity of this species is that they are solitary bees and females build their nest burrows close to each other but not in a hive. They also perform a special pollination movement called “buzz pollination”, which is very important for the conservation of quite a few native flowers. Hopefully this information illustrates what attracts me to this subject matter.   I painted this piece along with the Cloak and Dagger Cuckoo Bee which is also a native Australian bee. These two species happen to be intertwined as the Cuckoo Bee lays its eggs in the Blue Banded bee’s nest to feed on their developing larvae.  All these relationships are what fascinates me about nature and they serve as my inspiration for my paintings. This piece is a study of one of the most astonishing Australian native bees. They have glittering metallic blues spots on their abdomen. Although Cloak and Dagger Cuckoo bees are indescribably beautiful, they lead a life that we might perceive to be deceitful because they lay their eggs in other bees' nests, particularly the Blue Banded Bee. Because of this symbiotic relationship, I decided to paint these two different species in individual artworks while at the same time complementing each other. Open edition print. This piece is a study of one of the most colourful Australian native bees. This beauty has only been found in Western Australia. Seems to be, this species only reproduces one generation of bees each year, around September with the arrival of spring. Although not a lot of information about this species was available, its glorious metallic greens captivated me and rendering this piece brought me great personal satisfaction. Open edition print. This piece is a study of a very elusive  Australian native bee. Euruglossina Mellea although it only has been recorded a few times in Victoria and Queensland these two sites do span almost the entire east coast of Australia. Another peculiarity of this species is that their appearance is very fairy-like. I decided to accentuate the irradiance effect of their wings to enhance its natural magic. Open edition print. • This piece is a study of a familiar Australian native bee for the residents of Adelaide. The Golden Pea Bee (Trichocolletes Venustus) has a preference for only a few species of native peas. Another peculiarity of this species is that they  are an important pollinator of donkey orchids, which they mistakenly identify as pea species.  This is a great benefit for the orchid and also very important for the conservation of these rare native flowers. Australia  currently has 56 species of Lipotriches, in the particular case of Lipotriches Australica they dig nest burrows in the ground, up to three females may use the same nest and take turns guarding the entrance. Lipotriches bees can be identified by their light coloured hair bands across their abdomen. Open edition print. Signed and unnumbered. This piece is a study of one of the most graceful Australian native bees. Their airy and delicate wings really caught my attention. Their colours may vary from glints of aqua blue, golden green and orange. They are solitary bees and females build their nest in deep burrows in the ground. These nests are shared by many females, more than a hundred of them.  Another peculiarity of Homalictus Bees, is that they carry pollen on soft fine feathery hair underneath the abdomen, as well as on their hind legs. This piece is a study of one of the most unique Australian native bees. Unlike most  native bees, Stingless bees are social and they produce honey. Although they all look similar in their simple black or dark brown design, a closer look reveals dense white fur on the sides of their thorax and their faces. Another peculiarity of this species is that they are only found in warm areas in northern and eastern Australia. Open edition print. Signed and unnumbered. Another peculiarity of this species is that they lay their eggs in the nests of other bees. In the case of the Waroona Cuckoo Bee, they tend to prefer blue-banded bees and the teddy-bear bees.
